Through the hole made on the ice,

I fish a smelt see-through like an ice.

Seeking for light,

Smelts gather up.

Dashing through the ice hole,

Stars present themselves in transparency.

Sending lights along the concentric circle,

Stars are drawn in.

Deep into the waters of the river,

Smelts release glittering lights.

Unable to make themselves stay within sight,

Stars send clean lights with those from others.

My misunderstanding, that I am so transparent

that I can generate light by myself together with the stars.

If the stars increase in number,

He would come back.

With a single light,

I try to fish stars, one by one.

I count those caught, one by one,

Eleven, twelve, and thirteen.

Yet the stars on the sky do not reduce in number

Despite all of my optimum efforts made.

얼음구멍을 뚫고

얼음처럼 속이 훤히 비치는

별빙어를 낚는다.

불빛을 찾아 모여든 별빙어 떼는

얼음 구멍 속을 도는

투명체의 작은 별들이다.

동심원을 따라 빛을 내며

빨려 들어오는 별들,

별빙어 떼는 강물에

찬란한 빛을 가득 풀어 놓는다

저 혼자서는 보이지 않는 별,

빛을 받으면 비로소 투명한 빛을 내는 별,

그가 있을 때 나는 나 자신이 투명하다 못해

스스로 빛을 내는 줄만 알았어

별이 많아지면 그가 돌아올 거야

불빛 하나로

자꾸자꾸 별을 낚는다.

열 하나, 열 둘, 열 셋……

아무리 낚아도 줄어들지 않는 별……
